The second reason is that dumplings are stuffed with fillings, allowing people to put a variety of auspicious things into it, and in this way people pin their hopes for the next year.
People often put peanuts, Chinese Dates and chestnuts inside the dumplings. Those who eat peanuts will be healthy and live a long life; those who eat Chinese dates and chestnuts will have a baby soon.
There are a wide variety of dumplings due to their diverse fillings inside and different methods of making. Even dumplings of the same kind have different ways of eating.

New Year cake is an essential food prepared for the Chinese New Year. It has a history of over 2,000 years in Chinaand is still popular nowadays.
It is steamed food made of rice flour.There are two kinds of New Year cake: the southern style and the northern style.
Those made in Guangdong and Suzhou provinces are the best among southern style New Year cakes,because they are pure in fragrance, delicate in taste and neither hard nor soft.
They do not melt when cooked and fried, so they are warmly welcomed by people. Fried New Year cake is an unique method of eating New Year cakes.
It can be cooked in many ways,and different methods require different ingredients, each of which is delicious and nutritious.

吃汤圆/元宵这一习俗起源于宋代,流行于明代(1368–1644)和清代(1644–1911)Tangyuan in Chinese has a similar pronunciation with" tuanyuan", meaning reunion. 。
Eating tangyuan (Yuanxiao) is an important custom of the Lantern Festival.These ball-shaped dumplings are made of glutinous rice flour and are stuffed with different fillings such as white sugar, brown sugar, sesame seeds, peanuts, walnuts, rose petals, bean paste, and jujube paste or a combination of ingredients. They are usually sweet.
Yuanxiao can be boiled, fried, or steamed, and are customarily served in fermented rice soup, called tianjiu
(甜酒 tián jiǔ /tyen-jyoh/ sweet liquor).As tangyuan is pronounced similarly to tuanyuan (团圆 /twan-ywen/ group round)
, which means the whole family gathering together happily, Chinese people believe that the round shape of the balls and their bowls symbolize wholeness and togetherness.
Therefore, eating tangyuan on the Lantern Festival is a way for Chinese people to express their best wishes for their family and their future lives.
It is believed that the custom of eating tangyuan originated during the Song Dynasty, and became popular during the Ming
(1368–1644)and Qing (1644–1911) periods.
